Scaling and Root Planing:
Sometimes Referred to as Deep Cleaning. When teeth have been neglected or improperly cleaned for a number of years hardened bacteria (tarter) can adhere to the roots of the teeth causing a mild chronic infection. In the early stages this mild infection can go unnoticed and may not show any symptoms, but over time it will infect the surrounding bone causing the teeth to become loose or even shift, causing spaces between your teeth. Recent Studies have also made a direct link between this bacteria and increased incidence of heart disease. The scaling and root planning procedure is usually done in 2 sessions, the doctor or hygienist will numb your teeth and gums with local anesthetic. Using special instruments that go beneath the gums they remove the bacteria. Local antibiotics can be injected into the spaces or pockets created by the bacteria to help the healing process. Once the process is complete we recommend 1 month follow up to determine if the healing is progressing at the normal rate, and cleaning 4 times a year for the first year or two after.
